These popular glasses are mouth-blown replicas of the legendary Pontarlier Absinthe Glass without the facet cuts. Originally named after the glass, it first appeared in a late 19th-century advertisement for the absinthe producer Pernod Fils, which featured its hometown newspaper from Pontarlier, France. See photo. The small, sleepy town of Pontarlier was once home to the most maker of absinthe in the world and to those considered the best absinthe makers in the world. Pernod Fils, thought to be the best of the best, was the first to take up production there.

Our Pontarlier absinthe glasses are made in the same proportions as the original glasses, including their reservoir. The reservoir is the area used to measure the amount of absinthe to be used. It was intended to aid the bartender in a bar setting by knowing the correct amount of absinthe to pour, and it helped the customer know it was an honest pour. The reservoir size generally correlates with the size of the glass being used. The reservoir measures 25 ml (.8 oz), the standard amount for an absinthe glass of this size. The ratio of water to absinthe depends on the preparer's preference but is typically 1 part absinthe to 3 - 5 parts water.

  • Includes two glasses per box.
  • Mouth-blown glass.
  • Measures 3.375" (8.6 cm) in diameter x 5.25" (14.6 cm) in height.
  • Each glass holds 9 fl oz (26.6 cl).
  • Reservoir holds approximately .85 fl oz (25 ml).
  • Imported.

Reservoirs may vary slightly, as glasses are mouth-blown.

Boxes are multi-language, featuring English on one-side and French on the other.

An absinthe spoon is laid over the rim of the glass containing a dose of absinthe, and a sugar cube is placed atop the spoon. Cold water is slowly poured or dripped from a fountain or carafe onto the piece of sugar. The sugary water falls from the spoon into the glass, mixing with the absinthe, releasing essential oils and perfuming the air with the smell of anise, fennel, and grande wormwood. The combination of the water and anise also turns the absinthe milky white.

An absinthe is made to one's taste, so the ratio of absinthe to water varies but generally ranges from 1 part absinthe to 3 - 5 parts water.

We suggest washing the glasses before use.

Commercial dishwasher safe.
